The Legion of Mary is an international association of Catholics, who have formed themselves into a body to be of service to the Church in the modern world. The Legion takes as its model Our Blessed Lady, Mary Immaculate, and through their devotion to Mary as the Mother of God, legionaries try to emulate her in presenting Christ to the world.
The Legion of Mary undertakes many forms of pastoral work in the parish. This pastoral work includes visitation of the sick in the local Dalriada Hospital, as well as visitation to the nursing and care homes in Ballycastle.
Members of the Legion lead the praying of the Rosary in Leabank and Rathmoyle Nursing Homes on Wednesday afternoon. The residents of these nursing homes appreciate the opportunity of getting together to pray a much-loved prayer. It also gives them a sense of belonging to a faith community, important to them,as many of them are unable to attend public worship in the Church.
The Rosary is also recited in parishioners’ homes when they receive the Statue of our Lady of Fatima. Any parishioner who would like the privilege of having the Statue of our Lady of Fatima in their home for a week can contact any member of the Legion of Mary.
Members of the Legion also visit sick and elderly parishioners in their homes, as well as carrying out house-to-house visitation.
The Legion of Mary has been described by Pope Paul VI as “the greatest movement, which has been established for the good of souls, since the era of the great religious orders.” Anyone who would like to be part of this great movement can contact any member of the Legion of Mary.
The Ballycastle branch or Praesidium of the Legion meets every Tuesday evening at 7.30 pm in the Old Sacristy, St Patrick's and St Brigid's Church, Ballycastle.
The Junior Legion of Mary meets in the Crypt on Thursdays from 3.40pm - 4.40pm (commencing Sept 2011)
