Samaritans is an international organisation that was founded in 1953 by Dr Chad Vara.  His early career as a vicar inspired him to set up a unique listening service for people who were feeling depressed or suicidal.  Their mission is to provide confidential emotional support 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those that may lead to suicide.
